Why is the 18th of July called Mandela Day?
Nelson Mandela International Day, is a day celebrated across the world in honour of Mandela and was officially declared as an international day by the United Nations in November of 2009, with the first ever Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010. It is also the former President’s birthday!
On Mandela Day itself, we are encouraged to spend 67 minutes of our time in service to others in need or to our environment. These 67 minutes are in appreciation of the 67 years that Nelson Mandela spent fighting for justice, equality and human rights for all!
This year, the Nelson Mandela Foundation is specifically focusing on enhancing efforts to stall and reverse global climate change by planting one million trees, as well as addressing food insecurity by enhancing community gardens across South Africa. By taking action in ensuring that residents have a clean environment within which to live and thrive, the Nelson Mandela Foundation calls on everyone to contribute in their own way on Mandela Day.
We are calling on Residents to please keep going with our efforts to keep our Village litter free. Let’s do our bit for our own spaces and our Communal spaces in Harfield Village and let’s all commit to going out and collecting 67 pieces of litter on the 18th of July.

– 1st Avenue and 2nd Avenue on both sides, close to Imam Haron and Kenilworth Roads

Har-Lyn Neighbourhood watch are always looking for more Patrollers, especially during the day. From as little as 2 hours per week, you can help make a huge difference in your Community!
Without them looking out for us we would have a lot more crime in our area.

To check your street lights are working out of load shedding times! If they are not, please report them to the City on the eservices site below. If they do not respond, please send me an email with your reference numbers to follow up! You can also use eservices to log broken or missing street signs, potholes, or broken pavements, dislodged paving stones, stolen drain covers or a road in need of resurfacing, dumping, litter, squatting and more.
If you do not log your complaint it will not get attended to. Also the more times you log a request the more chance you have of it being attended to.
