HVCID Newsletter – February 2024

In partnership with

 Dear Residents of Harfield Village,

It is Leap Day!  Do you know why Leap years exist?

Leap years happen because of a “mismatch between the calendar year and Earth’s orbit,” according to NASA. While we think of one year as lasting 365 days, it actually takes a little longer — approximately 365 days and 6 hours — for the Earth to orbit the sun. That extra quarter of a day has to go somewhere, so around every four years, we add 24 hours — or four times six hours — to the calendar.
The extra day keeps calendars and seasons from gradually falling out of sync.  Without Leap Days, in 100 years, calendars would be 24 days off.

Another LEAP you may not know about is the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) in the Western Cape.  This is a collaborative initiative between the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town. It aims to contribute significantly to regional safety by curbing severe crime in areas identified as crime hotspots.  It is operational in 13 murder hotspot areas in Cape Town.  In October 2023 alone, LEAP officers made over 1,100 arrests and confiscated 24 firearms,
522 illegal firearms have been taken off of the streets since the inception of LEAP. It is estimated with every firearm that is confiscated; 14 lives are saved.
Collaboration for Safety – LEAP also synergizes its efforts with various other law enforcement bodies, including the South African Police Service (SAPS), neighbourhood watch groups (NHWs), Community Policing Forums (CPFs), and other relevant stakeholders. The more collaboration there is, the stronger their chances are of making a significant impact in crime-fighting endeavours and making communities safer.

Important reminders and notices.

A reminder:  If you are the unfortunate victim of a crime or attempted crime, no matter how small, please take note of as much detail as possible and open a case at SAPS, as soon as you can. The quicker you go to SAPS, the easier it is to hopefully apprehend and arrest the suspect/s.
Take note of the vehicle registration, colour, make, model, number of occupants, gender of occupants, location and what direction they are travelling in.
Give a comprehensive description of the individual/s (E.g. W/male wearing red hoodie with a green bag and white takkies.)
And please WhatsApp me the case number on 081 412 6109.

Report, Report, Report any areas of concern to the City And if the issue persists, please keep logging your complaint as areas are given priority by the number of complaints received. So the more you log, the more chance there is that something will be done!  If they do not respond, please send me an email, with your reference numbers to follow up!
