HVCID Newsletter – July 2024

In partnership with

Mandela Day is an annual global celebration and movement of ordinary people doing extraordinary things for their communities. It takes place on 18 July, Madiba’s Birthday, and honours his life and legacy.

Nelson Mandela Day is perhaps best known for its slogan, “67 Minutes of Service”, representing 67 years of Madiba’s Life of activism and mobilisation, his years in prison, as well as his years as President of the Republic of South Africa.

67 Minutes gives people an opportunity to take part in short, action based projects in service of their communities while bringing different sectors of society together.

This years slogan is a return to Madiba’s words for making good in the world –
“It is still in your hands to combat poverty and inequity.

With this message we are motivating the world to take ownership of our communities and of the wellbeing of the people in our neighbourhoods. In the difficult economic and social environment we are in, nobody is coming to save us. It is up to all of us to uphold the legacy of our beloved icon, Nelson Mandela.

By giving a little of your time each day to making a change that’s close to your heart or by giving a little of your time to make a difference to the life of someone else, you can start changing the world around you.  No matter how small your action, Mandela Day is about changing the world for the better.

IT IS IN YOUR HANDS
